Marco Rubio/White House

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is firing back at reports that he is preparing to jump ship from President Donald Trump’s administration following Tuesday’s devastating Republican midterm election losses, dismissing speculation that he intends to resign and launch a presidential campaign in 2028.

The rumors erupted Thursday after multiple outlets, citing anonymous sources, claimed Rubio was considering abandoning his powerful positions as secretary of state and White House national security adviser to position himself as a potential successor to Trump.

But Rubio says the reports are simply not true.

Speaking to The New York Times on Thursday, Rubio insisted he intends to remain in Trump’s administration until the president completes his second term in January 2029.

“I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you,” Rubio said of the reports. “I love the work I’m doing. And plus I always laugh when they say he’s going to leave his job. I go, ‘Which one?’” He added that he “literally will not talk about 2028 anymore. I just won’t do it.”

The White House and State Department both slammed the claims as baseless. Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson called one report “completely baseless fake news from made-up anonymous ‘sources’” and labeled the Bloomberg piece “complete and total fake news based on the word of anonymous sources, befitting a tabloid.”

He stated that Rubio “has not discussed leaving his role and he will continue to proudly serve in President Trump’s administration long after this fake news is revealed as yet another baseless hoax.”

The speculation exploded after Republicans suffered a brutal midterm defeat on November 3, with Democrats seizing control of both the House and Senate in a sweeping blue wave that reached into former Republican strongholds.

Vice President JD Vance publicly attributed the losses primarily to the Iran war, writing on X: “The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.” Vance noted that many 2024 Trump-Vance voters switched to Democrats over the conflict, cost of living, and other issues, adding that any honest conversation must start there. Trump has acknowledged the war was a factor while defending the decision.

British outlet The Independent and Bloomberg, relying on unnamed sources, claimed Rubio was “on resignation watch,” weighing an exit to distance himself from the Iran war and prepare a 2028 run against Vance.

One source told The Independent that Rubio needed to “distance himself from the Iran war and pin that one on Trump” and that remaining tied to the administration would harm his prospects. Both the administration and Rubio’s own statements rejected this.
