For 90 years, the University of San Francisco was represented by their mascot nicknamed “The Don.”
The figure, sporting a mustache and a Spanish-style hat, is apparently “too colonial” for the woke mafia and will be “retired” in the spring of 2027 after pacing the sidelines since 1932.
The mascot’s origins come from the first mayor of Yerba Buena, which became San Francisco, Don Francisco de Haro.
In 2022, students at the university passed a formal resolution demanding its removal and arguing the character symbolized the “exploitation and subjugation” of California’s Indigenous people.
A student petition supporting the measure gathered more than 400 signatures.
The Associated Students of the University of San Francisco (ASUSF) Senate has officially passed their resolution calling to change the University of San Francisco mascot!
In the fall, following an article published in the San Francisco Foghorn, the ASUSF Senate held their Town Hall for the undergraduate student community to attend, including representatives of all Undergraduate Student Organizations, regarding the appropriateness of our mascot. The conclusion from the student leaders in the room was unanimous: the “Don” mascot does not represent the University of San Francisco community. Thus, the ASUSF Senate took action and passed a resolution on behalf of the undergraduate student population at USF calling to change our mascot.
This resolution calls for a task force of students, staff, and administrators to be formed at the start of the 2023-2024 academic year to work through necessary logistics of this change, such as what the new mascot should be, and the Don mascot shall be officially null and void by the start of the 2024-2025 academic year.
IT WAS DONE IN 1931. LET’S DO IT AGAIN.
But, this resolution passed by the ASUSF Senate is just the first step to implementing this change: it is the formal document outlining the arguments for changing the mascot, to be sent to the USF Board of Trustees. This resolution passed with the support of every Chartered Student Organization. Now, it is time for us, the USF community to mobilize and show support for this change. The louder we are, the more people we mobilize, the more likely the university will hear our voices. We need YOU to use YOUR voice.
We encourage you to sign this petition on behalf of yourself, or as a representative of your organization. We encourage you to include a comment demonstrating your support for this cause. Share this petition with fellow USF friends, students, professors, and community members:
LET’S UNITE AND IGNITE CHANGE!
According to The New York Post, USF President Salvador Aceves “framed the transition as a natural evolution for the university alongside newly appointed athletic director Brent Blaylock.”
“With new leadership at USF and in Dons Athletics, we believe the time is right to revitalize our image and embrace a new mascot, one that is known for its intelligence, endurance and ability to work cooperatively in its pack,” Aceves said. “At the same time, we will proudly remain the University of San Francisco Dons.”
The new mascot will be a wolf, and the athletic teams will still retain the traditional “Dons” nickname.
Not everyone supported the change.
Once upon a time, for almost a century, USF had integrity and courage empowered by its history. But the 21st century version of the school? Cowardly faceless administrators:
