Ilhan Omar

More than 170 House Democrats have demanded that the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security stop the ongoing criminal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar after federal agents executed a judicially authorized search of her Washington, D.C., home earlier this month.

The letter, dated October 26 and led by Reps. Pramila Jayapal, Jamie Raskin, Bennie Thompson, Robert Garcia, Yvette Clarke, and Greg Casar, describes the pre-dawn search as an unprecedented “weaponization of law enforcement.”

“This weaponization of law enforcement to harass a sitting Member of Congress 22 days before an election is unprecedented and unacceptable,” wrote the Members. “We stand with Congresswoman Omar and condemn the weaponization of law enforcement against her. You have already disgraced the offices you hold, and we demand you to refrain from taking any further actions that could affect the outcome of the upcoming election.”

“Your actions are clearly driven by a pre-determined political outcome rather than an objective pursuit of justice,” the letter continued. “Political attacks should play no role in federal law enforcement, but they have here.”

The letter was sent to Attorney General Todd Blanche and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and asserts that the probe centers on immigration paperwork filed by Omar’s late father when she was supposedly a minor, after the family fled Somalia’s civil war.

Agents are investigating whether Omar or her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, intentionally lied about her birth date on paperwork so she could gain citizenship through him as a minor when he was naturalized in 2000, despite being a legal adult.

Investigators are also scrutinizing her father’s past military service in Somalia and whether relevant information was omitted.

The members argue that questions about decades-old documents do not justify seizing her phone, passport, and other items from her residence, and they contend the action violates longstanding Justice Department norms against overt investigative steps involving candidates so close to an election.

They demand that officials “refrain from taking further actions” that could influence the race in Minnesota’s 5th District and declare that “political attacks should play no role in federal law enforcement.”

Omar has described the search as an attempt to “target political enemies” and “weaponize federal law enforcement,” stating she will not be silenced.

In interviews, she recounted agents arriving around 6 a.m., conducting an hours-long search while her husband and son were present, and seizing multiple phones, notebooks, and other items.

Omar has claimed that the publicity has made it unsafe for her family to remain in the home due to death threats.

Former President Barack Obama called the investigation “appalling,” and House Democratic leaders, including Hakeem Jeffries, issued a joint statement labeling it a “rogue abuse of power.”

As of the letter’s release, Omar has not yet been charged with a crime.
