Merz arrived in Kyiv by train. At a joint press conference, he and Zelensky announced a German package worth over €1.3 billion ($1.46 billion), including €1 billion in military aid with funding for interceptor drones that can counter Russian jet-powered weapons, and about €350 million for energy. Germany will also supply thousands of IRIS-T missiles and additional IRIS-T fire units. “This will quickly and noticeably strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, and this reinforcement is urgently needed,” Merz said. The two countries signed 15 cooperation documents. The visit came days after Ukrainians marked Pokrova, an observance that links Christian faith with military service.
Zelensky said the U.S. is proposing “some kind of meeting at the technical level in a trilateral format by the end of October.” He said he spoke directly with the U.S. negotiating team on October 3 and that Ukraine is ready to participate.
Asked whether Russia had shared its new jet-powered drone with North Korea, Zelensky replied, “Yes, of course.” Zelensky also congratulated Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, whose pro-Ukraine United List won 41 seats in the 100-seat Saeima.
