As the California Governor’s race heats up following Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra’s first debate last week, Becerra has resorted to debate dodging to save his dwindling lead in the deep-blue Golden State.
Last week, the Los Angeles Times announced that it would co-host a candidate forum with LAist, which Hilton attended but Becerra skipped. This comes after Becerra pledged himself to participate in multiple debates before election day. “We will have debates, and between now and Nov. 3, we will continue to go out there and meet with folks to make sure they have an opportunity to see the candidates,” Becerra previously told reporters. “Voters need to have good information. We’ll make sure they have it, and there will be debates.”
Hilton showed up and used the opportunity to grill Becerra for walking back on his promise. “I’m looking forward to, perhaps one day, having another chance to sit down with my competitor,” Hilton told the moderators.
“We’ve had one debate. He promised that there would be debates, plural, not to be today but hopefully we can have that conversation because Californians deserve a conversation about the future of our state. It’s 16 years now that we’ve had one party running everything, and if you look at history, if you look at other countries, when that happens, when you have one party rule, in the end, it doesn’t deliver the results that we want.”
Hilton, on Monday, in a social media video before the forum, also called out Becerra, highlighting reports that he had previously pledged to participate in multiple debates and a poll showing utter defeat in their last debate hosted by CNN.
An internal poll taken by pollster David Wolfson and commissioned by Hilton’s campaign shows that among voters who watched the debate, nearly 75% say Hilton won while only about 20% say Becerra won. Additionally, per the New York Post, the poll of 1,020 California voters conducted on October 1 and 2 showed a huge swing toward Hilton, with 40.1% to Becerra’s 45.7%. A poll a week prior showed Becerra with a wide lead of 52%-37%.
“He promised that there would be debates, plural. There was one last week. Now I wonder why he pulled out of this one,” Hilton said. “Do you think it could have anything to do with this new poll that showed that the massive majority of people who watched the debate decided that I’m the best choice for governor?”
He added, “It is totally pathetic that this guy won’t debate, won’t do any interviews, won’t do anything. He is taking you for granted, and it is completely outrageous.”
Former Los Angeles Mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt, whose open primary election in June was rigged and stolen by Socialist Nythia Raman, also chimed in, slamming the “b*tch move by Becerra” in an X post. “Debates are good for voters, Xavier. Just try it,” Pratt said.
Wow. What a bitch move by Becerra. Debates are good for voters, Xavier. Just try it.

It’s no surprise after Hilton eviscerated Becerra in their last debate. Hilton destroyed Becerra on his record as HHS Secretary under Biden, where he lost track of hundreds of thousands of unaccompanied minors who were trafficked across the border and likely sold into slavery.

Hilton also called Becerra out for his incompetence, causing a reported rift between him and his colleagues in the Biden Administration, and being so bad at his job that Susan Rice called him an “idiot” and a “b*tch ass.” Longtime Democratic operative and Obama advisor, Susan Rice, played a central role in Biden’s border policy as his Director of the Domestic Policy Council.
“According to your Democrat colleagues, the ones who worked with you, like Susan Rice, who worked with you side-by-side when you were in the Biden cabinet, she described you as an idiot. She called you bitch-ass. Why did Susan Rice, a respected political leader, call you an idiot?”
