The Democrats are breaking out the big guns for Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, sending in former President Obama to campaign for him.
This is not a sign of confidence in El-Sayed’s campaign, quite the opposite, actually.
As you may recall, Abdul El-Sayed did not do well with black voters in Michigan during the Democrat primary race for senate a few months back. Democrats are hoping Obama can change that.
It didn’t work for Kamala Harris, why do they think it’ll work now?
The Associated Press reports:
Obama is to appear with El-Sayed in Detroit as the ex-president gets more involved in the midterms
Former President Barack Obama will campaign alongside Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Detroit later this month, lending his support to the progressive nominee after a bruising Democratic primary exposed divisions within the party.
Obama will appear with El-Sayed at an Oct. 24 rally that will also feature other top Democratic candidates in Michigan, including Jocelyn Benson, the party’s nominee for governor. Obama is getting significantly more involved in the midterm elections, with additional campaign stops and advertisements expected to come in the closing weeks, according to plans shared first with The Associated Press.
The Detroit event is a notable show of support for El-Sayed, who defeated moderate Rep. Haley Stevens in an August primary and has since worked to consolidate Democratic support in his race against Republican Mike Rogers. The open seat is expected to be among a handful that will decide which party controls the majority next year.
Obama taped two dozen ads last week for Democratic candidates for governor and Senate that will be released in the coming days and weeks, in addition to more campaign stops soon to be announced.
Scott Jennings of CNN nailed this, saying:
“What it tells me, though, is that all this Democratic confidence you hear out there about El-Sayed is a little misplaced, because I don’t think Obama would be going there if they were so confident about it.”
“And it also tells you something critical about the weakness in his coalition. He has significant trouble with African American voters in the Democratic primary. He has not shored up that support in Michigan.”
Watch:
When asked whether Republicans should “fear” or “welcome” Barack Obama campaigning in the midterms, Scott Jennings absolutely lit up the CNN panel.
His answer was brutal.
JENNINGS: “Well, neither because it’s expected he campaigns in every election. He’s the most partisan ate-up with politics ex-president we’ve ever had. I expect him to show up in every race, in every jurisdiction in the country. He can’t stand it. He has to be involved in politics, politics all the time.”
But then Jennings turned the question around.
If Democrats are really as confident about Abdul El-Sayed as they claim, why do they need Obama on the ground in Michigan?
JENNINGS: “What it tells me, though, is that all this Democratic confidence you hear out there about El-Sayed is a little misplaced, because I don’t think Obama would be going there if they were so confident about it.”
“And it also tells you something critical about the weakness in his coalition. He has significant trouble with African American voters in the Democratic primary. He has not shored up that support in Michigan.”
“They need Obama to try to do that. I’m not sure it’s going to be the total answer, but it’s not really a surprising development to me.”
That was the part the CNN panel probably didn’t want to hear.
Jennings basically turned Obama’s involvement into evidence that Democrats aren’t nearly as confident about Michigan as they claim to be.

Obama would not be doing this if El-Sayed’s campaign was confident about his chances.
