As world leaders gather in New York at the UN, they will be greeted by thousands of Iranian-Americans from across the U.S. who are expected to protest the ongoing political executions in Iran.

Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), has organized the rally, set for when President Trump is scheduled to address the Assembly.

The rally will turn into a protest on Wednesday when Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to speak.

They are there to demand an end to executions in Iran and to oppose Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, addressing the UN, noting he does not represent Iranians.

They are also advocating for a democratic and secular republic.

A smaller protest was held on Monday outside Pezeshkian’s New York hotel.

Organizers say Tehran has ramped up hangings while the regime is weak and society is restless, and cite hundreds of executions this Iranian year.

Per Human Rights Watch:

Between March 18 and end of August 2026, authorities arbitrarily executed at least 59 men on politically motivated and vague national security charges following grossly unfair trials. They include at least 29 arrested in connection with December 2025-January 2026 protests and at least 3 reportedly arrested in connection with the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests. Several were teenagers aged 18 or 19 and many others in their early 20s. Five were executed in public, violating the absolute prohibition of torture and other ill-treatment.

“Day after day, Iran’s authorities are sending protesters, including teenagers, to the gallows based on torture-tainted ‘confessions’ and following grossly unfair proceedings that are too short to establish a defendant’s guilt even for a minor offense, let alone for capital charges,” said Bahar Saba, senior Iran researcher at Human Rights Watch. “The authorities’ message is clearly that protests will be met with brutality, whether through bullets on the streets or public executions following sham trials.”

One activist, who came from California, shared, “I’ve come from California to New York, along with my family and thousands of other Iranians to protest the presence of Iranian President Mr. Pezeshkian at the 2026 General Assembly of the United Nations.”

“We are here to ask the world to condemn the renewed waves of political executions in Iran by the barbaric Mullahs regime in Iran.”

“We are also demanding that the world recognize the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), its president elect for the transitional period, and the organized resistance working towards establishing a free, democratic non-nuclear Iran, with separation of religion and government, equality between men and women, and abolition of the death penalty.”

Atekeh Khorsand, a member of NCRI’s Foreign Affairs Committee, noted, “On September 22 and 23, Iranians will gather in New York at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, at the intersection of 47th Street and 2nd Avenue, to protest Pezeshkian’s presence at the United Nations.”

The Iranian people do not recognize this perpetrator as their representative, citing the surge in executions and repression, and accusing him of bearing responsibility for the bloodshed of young protesters.”

Our message is clear: Stop executions and repression! Hear the voice of the Iranian people.”

“Our demand is for the UN to expel representatives of the mullahs’ regime and recognize the right of the Iranian people to have their own representatives at the United Nations.”
