Left-wing clubs at Utah Valley University are organizing a September 10 protest with a stated purpose of causing discomfort for people going to mourn and remember the assassinated young father.

Students for a Democratic Society chapter president Collin Grannis, in audio obtained by the Cougar Chronicle, said the fight is to make sure UVU “knows that there shouldn’t be a memorial on campus.”

Asked what they can actually do, he answered, “All that we’ll be able to do is stand outside, but if we can make it as uncomfortable as possible for people to get in.”

In a social media post announcing the protest, SDS UVU wrote, “On September 10th we will be protesting at the UCCU center where TPUSA is holding an event (organized by the Utah County Commision). The UVU administration has closed campus that day, and has endorsed this event, which is an endorsement of the views of Turning Point and Charlie Kirk. We will not stand for this, and we invite anyone who can attend to join us in solidarity to protest TPUSA, UVU Admin, and the Utah County Commissioners. Deescalation training will be held Tuesday and Wednesday the 8th and 9th.”

The groups called the administration’s decision to host the event an endorsement of Kirk’s “racism, homophobia, bigotry and hate.”

The memorial, titled “Freedom Built to Last, Honoring Charlie Kirk,” is set for the UCCU Center with Glenn Beck, Frank Turek, and TPUSA field officer Andrew Sypher.

“The gathering will honor Charlie as a faith-filled husband, father, and defender of free speech with a memorial that serves as a deliberate act of remembrance and a call for students and supporters to continue his life’s work,” TPUSA said in a press release about the event.

UVU canceled classes that day for “healing” while leaving the arena open.

Kirk was shot at a campus event at UVU on September 10, 2025.
