The WNBA Reportedly Says Two Former NBA Players Are Not Eligible to Play in the League – No Answer on Transgenders

ESPN reported Monday that multiple league sources said Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White would not be eligible for the WNBA after both former NBA players publicly declared themselves women and announced plans to enter the draft.

The league’s collective bargaining agreement says that “only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA,” but provides no further definition of the term, and the league does not have a publicly available transgender-athlete eligibility policy. That ambiguity is exactly what Kanter Freedom and White have spent the last few weeks exploiting.

Kanter Freedom kicked things off earlier this month by announcing that he was officially declaring himself a WNBA prospect.

“After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I’m officially declaring myself a @WNBA prospect,” he wrote. “If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.”

White quickly followed.

“I’m transgender. I’m a woman, so I’ll be declaring for the WNBA draft in 2027 as well,” White said.

ESPN also reported that sources said the league had made a determination on the eligibility of two individuals joining the league.

The WNBA has not announced any plans to prevent Enes Kanter Freedom from attending future games after he was ejected from Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Sunday, but multiple sources told ESPN that the former NBA player will not be eligible to play in the women’s league.

Sources around the league said Kanter Freedom and fellow former NBA player Royce White are not eligible to play in the WNBA after the pair declared themselves women and eligible for the draft.

Kantor was kicked out of the Fever-Chicago Sky game on Sunday after raising his arms and standing up near the court.  He was wearing a shirt that said, “WOMAN noun. adult human female.”

A Chicago player with tattoos all over, started shouting at Kantor during the game.  This led to his rejection.  “One source said Kanter Freedom had been making comments toward Cloud throughout the game, though a fan wearing a gold Caitlin Clark Fever shirt sitting near Kanter said he only cheered during the game.”

Kantor believes his stance on women is common sense:

Sophie Cunningham of the Fever shared basically the same thing, that only women play in women’s sports.
