President Trump trolled an MS NOW reporter during his NATO summit press conference on Wednesday, questioning why she would want to work for the “failing network.”
“They took [away] the name NBC because they were embarrassed by it,” Trump said of the recent rebranding.
The reporter, Ines de La Cuetara, identified herself as an MS NOW correspondent, and Trump responded, “You’re with who?” before she got her question out.
Upon learning that she was from MS NOW, Trump hilariously said, “MS NOW? That’s a failing network. Why would you want to work for them? MS Now, can you imagine? They wanted to get away. They took [away] the name NBC because they were embarrassed by it. Go ahead, let’s go. Wait till you hear this question.”
Trump was then surprised by the question, telling her at the end of the exchange, “It was a very fair question.”
De La Cuetara asked Trump whether the US would be there for Spain, Italy, and the UK, all of whom Trump lambasted in a meeting earlier in the day, if they were attacked. He specifically took aim at Spain, describing the nation as “a terrible partner in NATO” and declaring he wants to “cut off all trade with Spain, including visits.”
The other countries, Trump said, “were unwilling to help us,” but Spain had specifically barred the US from using its air and naval bases early in the conflict.
In response to the question, Trump again slammed Spain, saying they’ve been “very bad,” but he struck a more forgiving tone with Italy and the UK. “They just had a bad moment,” he said. “They didn’t help us. We didn’t need the help.”
“Every one of those countries, they love us, they love each other. That was tremendous unification,” he added.
WATCH:
Reporter: you said today that countries like Spain, Italy, and the UK were not there for the US in its war with Iran. Should those countries be attacked, will the US be there for them?
Trump: I’ll tell you what. Number one, Spain has been very bad but, you know, Italy has been good, and almost all of the countries have been good. They just had a bad moment. They didn’t help us. We didn’t need the help, but if we would have wanted the help— I said, by the way, if I want help, sir, would rather remain on the sidelines, and I didn’t like that answer. UK gave an answer that was sort of weirder than that.
They went out. I said, ‘Would you like to help? They said, ‘We do, but we want to wait till the war is over.’ This was not in the spirit of Winston Churchill. So, yeah, I mean, I’ll tell you what I can only say if there’s one word that comes out of today, it’s unification. I’ve never seen anything like it. Every one of those countries, they love us, they love each other. That was tremendous unification. It was a nice thing to say. It was a very fair question, too.
