Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) is facing backlash after sharing photos wearing a Mexico Jersey at a World Cup watch party.
Kelly shared a photo, beaming in the foreign nation’s jersey, and said, “Lots of people out in Tucson to watch Mexico take on England. Tucson and La Rosa sure know how to do the World Cup!”

A U.S. Senator wearing the jersey of another nation, during Independence Day weekend, no less, did not go over well.
Outkick founder Clay Travis asked, “What do we think about US politicians putting on jerseys from another country — in a tournament the US is playing in — and rooting for the foreign country in public?”
“Zero percent chance any American sports fans I know would do this.”

CNN’s Scott Jennings drew parallels to Kelly’s photos and the state of the Democrat Party.
“Modern Democratic Party: wear another country’s jersey and post a photo of yourself taking a photo of yourself.”

Mexico ultimately lost to England 3-2, eliminating them from the tournament.
Though Kelly embraced Team Mexico, he did not comment on some of the unsportsmanlike and vile behavior displayed by the team’s fans.
Before the game, Mexican fans played loud music and set off fireworks outside England’s hotel to keep the team awake as they had done to Ecuador’s team before their match.

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) also continues to face sanctions from FIFA for fans chanting a homophobic slur during national team matches, a persistent issue that has drawn international criticism.
The chant was heard again at the 2026 World Cup, during the Ecuador game in the Round of 32.
During the first half of the contest between the two South American juggernauts, Mexican fans reportedly sang a chant that is considered homophobic.
The chant is a one-word slur which when translated into English from Spanish means male prostitute.
According to reports, this is the second time during the 2026 tournament that the fans have used such chant.

The Mexican Federation has already been handed several fines by FIFA for their fans’ conduct, and the expectation is that another will be on its way.
