Trump is hoping for the best, but expecting the worst

War and peace in the balance.

As the whole world braces itself for a possible restart of hostilities in Iran, hope for peace appears to have been kindled, according to Chief White House Correspondent for CBS News Nancy Cordes.

She has just posted on X of a phone conversation she had with US President Donald J. Trump.

According to Cordes, Trump has received ‘a draft’ of a peace agreement with Iran, and said that ‘they’re getting a lot closer’.

This is much more hopeful news than we could infer from an earlier report from Axios, where Trump said it was a “‘solid 50/50’ as to whether he would be able to make a “good” deal or else ‘blow them to kingdom come’.”

CBS News reported:

“President Trump told CBS News that negotiators for United States and Iran are ‘getting a lot closer’ to finalizing an agreement that would end the war between the two countries.

Sources familiar with the negotiations told CBS News that the latest proposal includes a process to re-open the Strait of Hormuz, the unfreezing of some Iranian assets held in foreign banks, and a continuation of negotiations.”

Trump reportedly said the agreement is getting better every day.

“Mr. Trump did say that he believes the final agreement will prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, adding that he ‘wouldn’t even be talking about it’ otherwise. Mr. Trump added that the agreement would also result in Iran’s enriched uranium being ‘satisfactorily handled’.

‘I will only sign a deal where we get everything we want’, he said.”
