British PM and Labour Leader Keir Starmer

Even though he seems cornered and trapped, Starmer is fighting on.

Failing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has challenged Labour rebels to oust him, and refuses to resign in the biggest of many successive crises he has faced.

As many as 80 MPs have come out in support of Starmer’s resignation or of a leadership challenge that ousts him.

The Telegraph reported:

“The Prime Minister told a Cabinet meeting at 9.30am today that ‘the Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered’.

The Telegraph learnt before the meeting that six ministers – Shabana Mahmood, John Healey, Ed Miliband, Lisa Nandy, Yvette Cooper and Wes Streeting – had been expected to demand Sir Keir’s resignation.”

It arises that the Prime Minister did not give ministers a chance to speak against him, and when several of them tried to talk to him about his leadership, he refused to speak to them.

Sky News reported:

“Sir Keir Starmer said he would not discuss his leadership during the cabinet meeting, and would only speak to ministers about it individually.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates has learned that Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who is said to be preparing to challenge the prime minister, tried to speak to him after the cabinet meeting.

However, Starmer refused to see him – as well as every other minister who wanted to speak to him.”

BBC reported:

“Miatta Fahnbulleh – who earlier resigned from her ministerial post and told the prime minister to set a timeline for his departure – tells BBC News she would back Andy Burnham to be the next prime minister.

[…] Another minister has just resigned from Keir Starmer’s government.

In her resignation letter, safeguarding minister Jess Phillips says ‘deeds not words matter’.”
