A former surgical resident at the University of Toledo Medical Center in Ohio has pleaded no contest after being accused of pinning down his pregnant girlfriend while she slept and forcibly shoving crushed abortion pills into her mouth and gums.
Hassan-James Abbas allegedly carried out the attack at his Toledo home in 2024 after his girlfriend, who was also one of his patients, told him that she was pregnant and refused his repeated demands that she get an abortion.
According to prosecutors and the Ohio State Medical Board, Abbas secretly used his estranged wife’s personal information, including her full name, date of birth, and driver’s license number, to order one mifepristone pill and 12 misoprostol pills online.
In the days before the attack, Abbas “would offer his pregnant girlfriend hot chocolate and tea — a gesture that was reportedly inconsistent with the nature of their relationship, the prosecutor’s office said in its statement,” according to a report from People Magazine.
While the victim was asleep, Abbas allegedly climbed on top of her, held her down against her will, crushed the abortion-inducing drugs into powder, and shoved the substance into her mouth and beside her gums.
The woman woke up during the assault, fought back, and tried to call 911.
Abbas reportedly grabbed the phone and ended the call.
She eventually escaped the residence and sought emergency medical treatment at a local hospital.
Tragically, the unborn child did not survive.
Abbas was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury in 2025 on six felony charges.
The charges included abduction, tampering with evidence, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, disrupting public services, identity fraud, and deception to obtain a dangerous drug.
Earlier this month, Abbas entered a no-contest plea to four of the charges: unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, disrupting public services, identity fraud, and deception to obtain a dangerous drug.
As part of the plea agreement with the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office, the more serious charges of abduction and tampering with evidence will be dismissed at sentencing.
Abbas now faces a maximum of just five years in prison and fines of up to $15,000.
“We expect doctors to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism and not abuse another person in such an unacceptable way,” Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney Julia R. Bates said in a press release announcing the plea deal. “Doctors hold positions of trust and respect in the community, and this conduct represented a serious abuse of that trust. The conclusion of this case will likely never alleviate the trauma experienced by the victim and others who have heard about this case.”
Sentencing is scheduled for June.
Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life, wrote of the case, “Another sleazy man, surgical resident Dr. Hassan-James Abbas, has been accused of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend and forcing crushed Chemical Abortion Pills into her mouth against her will.”

“Until our nation begins taming the Wild West that is Chemical Abortion by demanding accountability, abusers, pill vendors, and abortion businesses will continue to win,” Hawkins continued. “And mothers and babies will continue to lose.”
