Difficulty updating his ‘heavenly bank account’.
Most of us have had a bad experience during phone calls with our banks – and apparently, even the most well-known are not spared this humbling experience.
It’s been reported today that a Chicago bank worker hung up on none other than Pope Leo XIV.
The pontiff was trying to change his on-file address to the Vatican, but the woman thought it was a prank.
This story (with slight variations) has been told by the pope’s brother, John Prevost, and close friend Rev. Tom McCarthy.
It is a scene that feels more like a sitcom script than a Vatican reality: Two months after Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago-born cardinal, was elected Pope Leo XIV, he found himself at the mercy of a customer service representative.

“‘Would it matter to you if I told you I’m Pope Leo?’” the pope asked his bank, according to Rev. Tom McCarthy, longtime friend of the Chicago-born pontiff. https://t.co/v9F4oJiQiz

At this point, the man formerly known as Robert Prevost was in need of an old-testament ‘patience like Job’s’ – James 5:11 ‘See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy’.
The New York Post reported:
“The pontiff had a less-than-heavenly customer service experience when he called to update his personal info two months into his papacy last summer, Prevost told CNN’s OutFront Wednesday.
‘It went on so long, I said, ‘You know, ma’am, it might be helpful for you to know you’re talking to my brother who’s in Rome right now’’, said Prevost, who was apparently on the phone with the 70-year-old head of the Catholic Church.
“Yes ma’am. I’m Robert Provost”… Pope Leo calls his bank to change his address. She asks several security qs:”what’s your SS number? He gave it to her”. But when she’s told it’s the Pope? She slams the phone down (thinking prank). Leo’s brother John was on the call: pic.twitter.com/8c6w52Nr4n
