In a fiery post on Truth Social on Sunday, President Donald Trump unleashed on Rep. Ilhan Omar, accusing her of being deeply involved in Minnesota’s Somali fraud scandal.
Trump didn’t hold back, labeling Omar a “fake ‘Congresswoman’” who “hates the USA” and suggesting she deserves jail time—or worse, deportation back to Somalia.
Trump wrote:
“There is 19 Billion Dollars in Minnesota Somalia Fraud. Fake “Congresswoman” Illhan Omar, a constant complainer who hates the USA, knows everything there is to know. She should be in jail, or even a worse punishment, sent back to Somalia, considered one of the absolutely worst countries in the World. She could help to MAKE SOMALIA GREAT AGAIN!”
The post had nearly 50,000 likes by Monday afternoon.
Omar is a Somali-born refugee who became a U.S. citizen in 2000 and has represented Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District since 2019.
She has long been plagued by accusations of immigration fraud, as she married her own brother so he could gain citizenship.
The congresswoman has also amassed mysterious extreme wealth over the last few years, raising suspicion of her involvement in widespread fraud in Minnesota’s social services programs, particularly in the Somali communities. Reports show her net worth skyrocketed from under $1 million in 2023 to as much as $30 million by 2025, a 3,500% increase.
Meanwhile, federal prosecutors have been cracking down on what appears to be one of the largest COVID-19 relief scams in the nation.
Since 2022, charges have been filed against nearly 100 individuals, most of Somali descent, in connection with stealing hundreds of millions from child nutrition programs like Feeding Our Future.
Convictions so far total over $1 billion in stolen taxpayer funds, but estimates suggest the total fraud could exceed $18 billion across various state programs since 2018.
In late December, the Trump administration froze federal funding for Minnesota’s childcare and small business programs following allegations of massive abuse, including claims that fraudulent daycares run by Somali residents siphoned off up to $100 million.
A federal prosecutor alleged that half or more of the $18 billion in Medicaid and other funds may have been pilfered, with some money reportedly funneled overseas to groups like Al-Shabaab, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization.
