A young Democrat lawmaker was caught by police earlier this week allegedly driving drunk while putting his wife in and others in danger.

Fox News reported that 30-year-old Connecticut State Rep. Aundré Bumgardner was arrested Sunday morning in Groton, Connecticut, and charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving. Police authorities said in their report Bumgardner had “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath as he spoke.”

Police also noted that the Bumgardner’s eyes were “red and glossy” while one of his vehicle’s front tires was flat and “barely staying on the rim.”

Bumgardner reportedly told officers he had “struck something” while driving and was coming back home from an “event” with constituents. He did not elaborate further on this alleged event.

The police report said Bumgardner “appeared to be very nervous,” “had a slight slur in his speech,” and at first denied drinking any alcoholic beverages.

Bodycam footage obtained by Connecticut Insider shows Bumgardner struggling with basic roadside sobriety tests after being busted by the police. He repeatedly tries to use the wind as an excuse for his missteps and claims he’s “not much of balancer.”

After approximately four minutes, the police officer conducting the tests sees enough and places Bumgardner under arrest while his wife, who was also intoxicated, was asleep in the back seat. The officer informs Bumgardner that his car will be towed unless someone comes to pick it up.

Bumgardner’s wife was not arrested, and police later took her home, according to Fox News.

During the booking process, Fox News noted the Connecticut Democrat whined that the officer’s body camera was “very invasive to him” and appeared reluctant to sign informing him of his constitutional rights.

Bumgardner released the following statement in response to the incident:

Last night, I was cited for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence. I take full responsibility for my actions and deeply regret this mistake.

I am grateful that no one was harmed and that no accident occurred.
