When US President Donald J. Trump stated that Europe must take more responsibility for its own security, that meant they must arm themselves better, yes.
But, it also means that they must take responsibility for making wise decisions in the field of Defense.
To run around in a daze, spending what they don’t have on a military buildup while simultaneously fanning up the flames of a big – and unnecessary – confrontation between Europe and Russia – it’s irresponsible to say the least.
That’s what Conservative Champion, Hungarian Prime Minister – and EU establishment’s bête noire – Viktor Orbán has alerted.
Reuters reported:
“The EU cannot afford to finance Ukraine’s military efforts as U.S. financial aid is no longer guaranteed, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday after the leaders of 26 EU countries signed a statement voicing support for Ukraine without Hungary.”
Yesterday, EU leaders gathered in Brussels for the defense summit and advanced plans to spend dramatically more on their defense, while continuing to ‘stand by Ukraine’.
“But Orban, who has refused to send weapons to Ukraine since the start of the war, and kept close relations with Moscow, said that instead of prolonging the war, Europe should support Trump’s peace talks.”
Orbán alerted that the EU wanting to finance Ukraine’s war effort while also hiking their own defense spending, would ‘ruin Europe’.
“’If now the US quits (financing the war) […] why would the other 26 member states have a chance to take this war to the end?’, Orban told state radio. ‘Today it appears that I have vetoed. But within weeks they will come back and it will turn out that there is no money for these goals’.”
After he blocked the joint statement by EU leaders in support of arming Ukraine – as he usually does in these divisive matters – Orbán told reporters that Hungary would poll citizens on their support for Kiev’s EU accession.
Politico reported:
“Hungarians will have a say on whether they want Ukraine to join the European Union, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said early Friday — though the ballot is non-binding and will almost certainly be stacked against Kiev.
[…] ’We have the so-called national consultation scheme, which we use regularly to collect the opinion of the people, so we will use the same scheme just now’, he said.
Orbán’s government has launched over a dozen so-called national consultations since 2010 on a variety of matters, from migration to LGBTQ+ rights.”
The mail-in campaigns send voting-age Hungarians letters posing questions and inviting them to choose from a list of responses. The results are not legally binding.
