Liz Krueger

A New York State Senator is ready to endorse drastic measures to escape Donald Trump’s return to office.

State Sen. Liz Krueger, who chairs the legislature’s powerful Senate Finance Committee, wants her state to withhold federal taxes and seek to join Canada to escape Donald Trump’s mass deportation plans.

Politico reports:

State Sen. Liz Krueger knows her ideas to counter the incoming Trump administration — withholding more than $300 billion in federal taxes or encouraging a bloc of liberal northeast states to join Canada — are extreme (to say the least).

But the Manhattan Democrat believes Trump’s own plans, like the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants and threats to punish states that oppose the move, are severe enough to warrant a little norm-shattering thinking among Albany lawmakers.

“It’s not unreasonable to think outside of the box,” said Krueger, who chairs the powerful Senate Finance Committee.

New York Democrats have only a few weeks to bolster their blue state against Trump 2.0. Left-leaning legislators have unsuccessfully pressed for a December special session to pass measures that are aimed at protecting undocumented people and LGBTQ+ New Yorkers.

However, Krueger has admitted that Trump’s plans to withold federal funds from the state if it refuses to cooperate with the mass deportation of illegal aliens.

New York currently has an annual budget of $239 billion. It also receives around $85 billion from Washington, which if cut off could prove devastating to the local economy.

As the commander-in-chief, Trump will also have the power to veto large infrastructure projects such as the Gateway Program that will connect Newark Penn Station to New York Penn Station.

“We’re talking a lot of money,” Krueger said. “We’re talking money we couldn’t possibly replace unless we started sending the feds a lot less money.”

The idea of states seceding from the U.S. has become more popular in recent years, with campaigns in Texas and California gaining more traction than ever before.

Back in 2022 the Texas Republican Party’s platform included a call for a referendum on secession, reflecting growing support among conservatives for the idea.

In California, the Yes California movement seeks to encourage Californians to support secession from the U.S. so the state’s far-left liberal agenda stops being forced upon the rest of the country.
