The Alaska Republican Party has declared its intention to seek a full recount and comprehensive review of the razor-thin election results for Ballot Measure 2, a proposal aimed at abolishing Alaska’s open primary system and the use of ranked-choice voting in general elections.

The measure was narrowly defeated, with the “No” vote leading by a margin of just 0.1%, or 664 votes out of over 320,000 cast, according to nearly complete election results.

Ballot Measure 2 aimed to reverse Alaska’s controversial ranked-choice voting system and open primaries, implemented after a 2020 referendum. Under this system, the top four candidates in a nonpartisan primary, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the general election.

In 2022, Democrat Rep. Mary Peltola “won” reelection in Alaska to a full term in the House after she defeated Sarah Palin in a special election to replace Rep. Don Young.

Peltola was the FIRST DEMOCRAT to win the House seat in solid red Alaska in 50 years! She was only able to win the seat in the deep red state because of the conspiracy known as ranked-choice voting.

This is how Democrats steal seats. And Republicans let them.

Here’s how it works:

With 99% of precincts reporting, the results stood at 50.1% against the repeal (160,619 votes) and 49.9% in favor (159,955 votes). The slim margin has propelled the Alaska GOP, backed by the Republican National Committee, to call for a recount to ensure every vote is accurately counted and that the electoral process was fair and free of any discrepancies.

Read the press release below:

“The Alaska Republican Party will request a statewide recount and review of the election results for Ballot Measure 2 – the Repeal of Rank Choice Voting from the

2024 General Election. We will submit this request, along with the names of the requisite Alaskan voters required to initiate this process, once the election is certified, which is scheduled for November 30, 2024.

Together with our partners at the Republican National Committee, the Alaska Republican Party has assembled a team to oversee this process. We have engaged the Dhillon Law Group, led by Harmeet K. Dhillon, to be on the ground during the recount and review, along with our Party Counsel and observers.

Ms. Dhillon and her firm are a nationally recognized, seasoned election integrity legal team, and bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to this recount process. Ms. Dhillon is an expert in election law. She and her colleagues Michael Columbo and Mark Meuser were recently on the legal teams in Arizona, Pennsylvania, and other crucial locations nationally to ensure a fair, transparent, and thorough process. Our Party Counsel, Ms. Stacey Stone and her team, are experienced Alaskan election law practitioners, and in September 2024, they successfully intervened on the Alaska Republican Party’s behalf in the case of Alaska Democratic Party v. State of Alaska Division of Elections, ultimately prevailing in the Alaska Supreme Court.

The Dhillon Law Group, our Party Counsel, and I will lead this effort. We look forward to a thorough and comprehensive review and recount.”
