Pam Bondi’s speech during the Republican National Convention in 2020

The political landscape erupted Thursday evening as President Donald Trump announced Pam Bondi, former Attorney General of Florida and a staunch Trump ally, as his nominee for the next Attorney General of the United States.

Bondi’s nomination follows Rep. Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal, a decision that shocked many in the conservative base.

In his official statement, President Trump lauded Bondi’s impressive record as a prosecutor and her leadership as Florida’s first female Attorney General:

“I am proud to announce former Attorney General of the Great State of Florida, Pam Bondi, as our next Attorney General of the United States. Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida Families.

Then, as Florida’s first female Attorney General, she worked to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs, and reduce the tragedy of Fentanyl Overdose Deaths, which have destroyed many families across our Country. She did such an incredible job, that I asked her to serve on our Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during my first Term — We saved many lives!

For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”

Former Congressman Matt Gaetz, who had initially been chosen for the AG role, publicly endorsed Bondi’s nomination, calling her a “stellar selection.”

In a statement, Gaetz said, “Pam Bondi is a stellar selection by President Trump for Attorney General. Pam and I worked closely together when she was Florida’s Attorney General and I chaired Criminal Justice in the state house. She’s a proven litigator, an inspiring leader and a champion for all Americans. She will bring the needed reforms to DOJ.”

Despite Bondi’s proven loyalty to Trump, a resurfaced video from the 2016 GOP primaries has ignited controversy among the conservative base. The video shows Bondi endorsing Jeb Bush over Trump during the contentious Republican primary—a choice that many MAGA supporters view as a betrayal.

Social media exploded with backlash, with some questioning whether Bondi’s past allegiance to Bush makes her fit for the role of Attorney General in a Trump-led administration.

Donald Trump Jr. immediately came to Bondi’s defense, reminding critics of her steadfast loyalty to President Trump since his rise to power.

“In all fairness, I think my family and I may have been some of the only people who supported Donald Trump in the 2016 GOP primary. Once he broke through the lies and stereotypes and proved to be a populist leader, that all changed. Pam Bondi was one of his earliest supporters!”

Bondi has been an unwavering Trump supporter for years. During Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2020, Bondi dismantled the Democrats’ case by exposing the Biden-Burisma scandal.

Her track record of fighting for Trump’s vision and values, coupled with her experience as Florida’s Attorney General, positions her as a formidable candidate to lead the Department of Justice into a new era.
