Federal authorities arrested a Georgia man on Friday after he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in downtown Atlanta earlier in the week, hitting the perimeter fence and starting a fire.

U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg described the attack as a despicable “terroristic crime” and an act of political violence.

Inique Hinton, 31, has been charged with attempted arson of a federal building and depredation of government property following the incident at the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations office.

WATCH:

Surveillance cameras caught Hinton walking near the building around 8:12 p.m. on Tuesday, carrying a white plastic bag while wearing a black shirt, khaki pants, and black shoes, according to a criminal complaint and statements from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia.

Minutes later, at approximately 8:14 p.m., footage showed him igniting an item and throwing it toward the facility.

The device, later identified as an improvised incendiary device consistent with a Molotov cocktail, struck the exterior security fence, where flames spread across the top portion.

Hinton fled on foot.

A nearby Atlanta Police Department officer witnessed the throw and ran after him but could not apprehend him at the time.

Investigators later recovered a glass bottle, burned cloth, lighter fluid, and a lighter from the scene.

The device became caught on the fence and did not fully reach the building, limiting the damage.

No injuries were reported.

Authorities took Hinton into custody later in the week.

FBI agents made the arrest, and he is now in federal custody.

Hertzberg said at a news conference that law enforcement’s identification and apprehension of the suspect were exemplary and that prosecutors would respond with extreme severity to send a clear message that such conduct is unacceptable.

WATCH:

If convicted, Hinton faces a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum of 20 years in federal prison on the arson charge, plus up to 10 years on the property depredation count.

“Attacking a federal building with an incendiary device like a Molotov cocktail is a despicable, terroristic crime that warrants an immediate and severe response,” said Hertzberg in a press release. “My office will relentlessly investigate, pursue, and prosecute any act of arson targeting government institutions and will ensure that the perpetrators bear the full consequences of their actions.”
