Tennessee Department of Correction shows Christa Pike on Jan. 12, 2023.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has halted the state’s remaining execution for 2026 and ordered an outside investigation after convicted murderer Christa Gail Pike remained alive despite receiving two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital Wednesday night.

The extraordinary scene unfolded at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for Pike’s execution following hours of last-minute legal wrangling.

The Gateway Pundit previously broke the shocking developments as witness accounts revealed the gruesome circus unfolding inside the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.

Christa Gail Pike, a twisted killer who brutally tortured, slashed hundreds of times, and carved a satanic pentagram into her 19-year-old classmate Colleen Slemmer back in 1995 before keeping a piece of the victim’s skull as a trophy, was set to finally face justice. She was supposed to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over two centuries.

Instead, what the public witnessed was an unprecedented level of bureaucratic incompetence.

Executioners administered TWO FULL DOSES of the lethal drug pentobarbital, yet the conviction remained unfulfilled. According to terrified witnesses in the room, Pike remained alive for over an hour after the lethal cocktail was injected, gasping, snoring, and asking if the severe burning pain in her arm was “normal” while the state frantically pulled down the blinds to hide their complete ineptitude from the media.

Witnesses were abruptly ordered out of the room, and minutes later, sirens blared as ambulances rushed to the prison to give emergency medical care to a condemned murderer who was supposed to be dead!

A prominent death penalty expert blasted the fiasco as an “unprecedented failure” of basic state administration.

The Tennessee Department of Correction released the following statement:

“The Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the State’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office. The lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening. Christa Pike has been transported to an off-site medical facility.”

Following the jaw-dropping disaster, Republican Governor Bill Lee was forced to step in and completely halt all remaining scheduled executions in Tennessee for the rest of the year.

USA Today reported:

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said shortly before midnight that he ordered an investigation into what went wrong and has postponed the state’s one remaining execution scheduled for this year, that of convicted killer Gary Wayne Sutton on Dec. 3.

“Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State’s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective,” Lee said.”I have ordered a comprehensive, third-party review to determine exactly what occurred.”

The failed execution followed a day of tireless arguments from the state that Pike’s death was long overdue. It also comes four months after Tennessee botched another lethal injection, that of Tony Carruthers in May.

Death penalty observers were quick to condemn Tennessee as questions swirled about what had happened to Pike.

“The incompetence of the Tennessee (Department of Corrections) sets the bar at the lowest level tonight,” Abraham Bonowitz, co-Founder of Death Penalty Action, said in a statement. “There are no other words. This is an outrage. How do they sleep at night?”

Pike had requested an all-female execution team, and Tennessee officials had agreed to make efforts to accommodate that request, though it was not immediately clear whether every member of the team involved in Wednesday night’s failed execution was female.
