President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran is “over” following a new round of military strikes and escalating tensions between the two countries.

Trump made the remarks alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.

“I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore,” he said.

“They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people, and they’re vicious, violent people. And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s all over.”

He also said U.S. officials had sought to negotiate a broader peace agreement with Tehran but now believed it was “a waste of time dealing with” the Iranian side.

His remarks came after the U.S. military launched what U.S. Central Command described as a “series of powerful strikes” against Iran.

The strikes were a response to attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.

According to CENTCOM, U.S. forces struck more than 80 targets, including air defense systems, command-and-control networks, anti-ship missile capabilities, and more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps small boats.

In an earlier statement, CENTCOM said the operation was conducted “to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping crewed by innocent civilians in an international waterway.”

The command added that “the U.S. strikes are in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

”Iran’s demonstrated aggression was unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire.”

The Trump administration also revoked a Treasury Department waiver that had allowed Iran to continue selling oil.

Iran condemned the U.S. strikes, with its foreign ministry calling them “a gross violation of the Memorandum of Understanding” reached between Washington and Tehran last month.

The ministry added that “the powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as they have repeatedly shown, will not hesitate to defend Iran’s territorial integrity, national sovereignty, and national security against American military aggression.”
