Christian Zedig, a 32-year-old Swedish police officer and father of two young daughters, died following a violent assault by an African mob in Copenhagen, Denmark, during a World Cup viewing party.

Zedig, who was vacationing in Copenhagen, was watching the Norway vs. Ivory Coast World Cup match at a crowded fan zone/screening event at Islands Brygge when a fist fight broke out.

The off-duty officer tried to intervene and break it up, but was subjected to severe violence by the mob and was repeatedly punched, kicked and stomped, including multiple blows to the head, according to witnesses.

He was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries but died on July 2.

Frihetsnytt reports that a 31-year-old man with a prior criminal record, including attempted murder, turned himself in to Danish police on July 3 and was arrested/charged in connection with the assault. Danish police had publicly sought him earlier.

Visegrád 24 reports that, according to an eyewitness:

“A group of 7 or 8 young men arrived at the square during the match. It was completely clear that they had only come to cause trouble. They weren’t there to watch football”

According to the eyewitness, the young men waved to the Norwegian and Swedish fans who were present when Ivory Coast equalized to 1-1.

“When Norway scored the 2-1 winner, the Swedes and Norwegians responded, but with only half the intensity of the other group”

“Then the young guys started throwing beer and other things at the Scandinavians and started assaulting them. Suddenly a fight broke out, when the young men ran over to the table next to them and began beating the Norwegian and Swedish fans.”

The situation then escalated quickly, the witness explains. “One of the young men – a big guy – swung a fist at the head of a man in a Swedish national team jersey, who immediately fell to the floor. After that, several of the other members of the gang ran over and stomped him several times on the head him while he was lying on the ground. They then quickly fled the scene”

Member of the European Parliament and Vice Chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, Charlie Weimers, shared on X,  “My deepest condolences go to Christian Zedig’s family – his wife and the two little daughters who have now lost their father.”

“The 32-year-old Swedish football supporter and family man was brutally murdered in Copenhagen. He was just trying to calm a situation when an African gang kicked and stomped him to death during a World Cup match in a fanzone.”

“This is not a tragic accident. It is the direct consequence of the mass immigration and failed integration that the establishment in Sweden and the EU has forced upon us for decades. Ordinary Swedes and other Europeans are now paying the ultimate price with their lives.”

“While politicians talk about diversity and enrichment, violent cultures, parallel societies, and hatred toward Westerners are being imported. This must come to an end.”

“We need immediate border controls, mass deportations of criminals, and a complete overhaul of immigration policy.”

“Europe cannot continue to be a testing ground for uncontrolled migration from cultures that are not compatible with our values.”

“Rest in peace, Christian.”

“I wish your loved ones all the strength in this utter darkness and that the Danish police can swiftly apprehend the perpetrators so that justice can be served.”
