The elephant relieved itself outside the press area.

Texas Republicans got a surprise Friday afternoon when a live elephant brought onto the convention floor in Houston decided to make an unscheduled stop.

Party officials had teased a “larger-than-life surprise” and instructed attendees to clear the aisles before unveiling an actual elephant wearing a banner reading “UNITY DRIVES VICTORY” alongside Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s campaign logo.

The elephant’s appearance initially drew cheers, applause, and plenty of smartphones as convention-goers scrambled to capture the moment.

But the atmosphere quickly shifted from excitement to laughter when the animal abruptly paused its walk and urinated on the convention floor in front of hundreds of attendees.

“Oh, shoot!” one bystander shouted in video footage that quickly spread across social media.

The elephant had been brought in as Texas Republicans gathered for their annual convention, where delegates were selecting party leaders and preparing for the 2026 midterm elections.

The appearance came during a convention marked by significant internal party tensions, including the earlier removal of the state party chairman and lingering divisions from recent Republican primary battles, most notably Attorney General Ken Paxton’s victory over longtime Senator John Cornyn.

Videos of the incident immediately went viral online.

The elephant has been associated with the Republican Party since 1874, when political cartoonist Thomas Nast depicted the GOP as an elephant in a Harper’s Weekly cartoon.

The symbol caught on and eventually became the party’s unofficial mascot, representing strength, size, and stability.
