In 2011, the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant disaster was hit by a massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami, causing one of the worst radioactive disasters in history.

In the ‘ghost towns’ located in the nuclear fallout zone, a mutant ‘super pig’ population has surged out of control.

The New York Post reported:

“Amid the chaos, domestic pigs escaped into abandoned farmland and began interbreeding with indigenous feral boars — creating a mutant pig population with alarming genes, Popular Science reported.

[…] Researchers from Fukushima and Hirosaki Universities discovered through DNA analysis that the hybrid progeny inherited the maternal domestic pig’s rapid reproductive cycle, allowing populations to quickly multiply, unlike that of the boar, according to findings from the Journal of Forest Research.”

Wild boars reproduce once a year, while domestic pigs have a speedy, year-round reproduction cycle.

“Feral swine are one of the world’s most destructive invasive species, decimating crops, livestock, and delicate ecosystems. Efforts to repair their damage cost an estimated $3.4 billion in the US alone, according to the US Department of Agriculture.”

Daily Mail reported:

“In simple terms, the animals inherited the domestic pig’s ability to breed rapidly year-round, but over time, increasingly resembled wild boar genetically while still maintaining accelerated reproduction patterns.

Co-author Dr Donovan Anderson said: ‘We hypothesized that the domestic swine’s unique trait, a rapid, year-round reproductive cycle, might be the key.’

Researchers believe the discovery could help explain why hybrid pig populations have become so difficult to control in several countries, including the United States, Canada and parts of Europe, where feral swine are spreading aggressively.”
