Following the recent assassination attempt against President Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, ABC correspondent Jonathan Karl shared a story about a call from President Trump. The President, however, is calling Karl’s story fake news.
Following the attempt, Karl shared, “George, it was a frightening and bewildering scene. You know, that dinner has 2,600 people packed in that space. The tables are so close together that it’s hard to walk around. So when those muffled shots were heard, uh, in that ballroom, what happened next was actually louder.”
“The Secret Service charging down that center aisle, one of the few places you can freely walk in that place, crashing through barricades, knocking them over. Some of them actually climbing on top of the tables, a huge television monitor going to the ground as they approached the stage.”
“George, I have to say, one of the most frightening things about that whole scene was how frightened people in the room were, some of them diving under tables and watching those armed agents with their long guns on the top of the, of the stage.”
“Yeah, interestingly, it was just after 7 AM. It was my landline, which I don’t get many calls on, and it was the president, President Trump calling.”
“He said he was calling to see if I was OK.”
“It was clear that the real reason he was calling, in addition to that, was that he wanted to be sure that this dinner gets rescheduled. He knew that I had been involved in planning White House Correspondents’ Dinners. He said, ‘We have to get this done and done soon.’”
“And as people were raising doubts about questions about the security. He wanted to say that the Secret Service, in his view, performed very well, that they jumped into action and, and saved a lot of lives.”
“It was a frightening and bewildering scene.”

President Trump, however, called Karl out for not only putting out a fake news story about the genesis of the call, but also for trying to make the assassination attempt about himself.
President Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Jonathan Karl, of ABC Fake News, made a statement that I called him early in the morning, the day after the assassination attempt, to ask whether or not HE was OK.”
“No, this was a hit on ME, not HIM, and I didn’t make such a call, why would I do that?”
“He called me, but I didn’t take his call — He just confirmed that to me when he called again.”
“I would say that’s very dishonest reporting. He’s trying to make himself look important but, I’m not surprised, because it comes from ABC Fake News! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
