Stephen Colbert was forced to evacuate a Harvard University event Thursday evening after a fire alarm interrupted his appearance amid noisy demonstrations by striking graduate student workers.
The former Late Show host and Democratic Party propagandist, who had his show canceled by CBS in May, was appearing alongside celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma at Sanders Theatre for a discussion titled “Arts for Life’s Sake.”
The event was intended as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Harvard’s Learning from Performers program.
However, the evening descended into chaos when activist members of the Harvard Graduate Student Union, which is affiliated with the United Auto Workers, began protesting outside the venue.
Demonstrators shouted slogans, blew horns, and banged drums, making it difficult for audience members to hear Colbert and Ma.
The union had previously demanded that both men cancel their appearance in solidarity with striking workers.
Zero sympathy for Stephen Colbert, who was chased away from a Harvard lecture by stupid left-wing protesters who claim that speaking on campus means crossing a graduate student “union” picket line. Who’s afraid of freedom of speech? His team, apparently. https://t.co/vMiopfYK4p

Despite the pressure, Colbert and Ma proceeded with the event, prompting the union to accuse them publicly of crossing the picket line.
Approximately 35 minutes into the discussion, a fire alarm sounded, forcing the audience to evacuate and bringing the event to an abrupt end.
Firefighters subsequently investigated the alarm but found no evidence of a fire.
“The fire department investigated the alarm, found no reason for the alarm activation,” Cambridge Assistant Fire Chief Scott Volz confirmed.

The union denied responsibility for the alarm, insisting it was unrelated to its demonstrations and that members had no knowledge of what triggered it.
The disruption came as activist graduates and student workers continued a strike that began last month over pay, workplace protections and safeguards for international students.
The strike has also disrupted classes, examinations and other events across Harvard’s campus.
Author John Green had previously agreed to move his own Harvard appearance online and donate his speaking fee to the union’s strike fund.
Colbert and Ma, however, declined to hold the event regardless.
Harvard officials have not confirmed whether the event will be rescheduled.
