An illegal alien from Honduras was arrested in Polk County, Florida, for a deadly crash that killed a 71-year-old man and injured a 29-year-old man driving a separate vehicle.

Sheriff Deputies were dispatched on Monday a little after 6:00 am to the scene on State Road 37.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, 26-year-old Grevil Said Cerrato abandoned his vehicle, a Honda sedan, and fled the scene on foot. He was eventually found and taken into custody.

The 29-year-old victim was transported to the hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening.

According to investigators, the Toyota was traveling north. The Honda and Ford were traveling south, and the Honda was behind the Ford.

Investigators claim the driver of the Toyota lost control because of poor weather conditions, crossed into the southbound lanes, and hit the Ford Focus. The Toyota also collided with the Honda, which Cerrato was driving.

According to the Sheriff, Cerrato told the traffic homicide detectives he fled because he was frightened, did not have a driver’s license, and was in the country illegally.

Authorities have not released the names of the two crash victims. They also have not said whether or not the driver of the Toyota will face any charges or traffic violations for losing control of his vehicle.

Cerrato was charged with leaving the scene of a deadly crash, which is a first-degree felony. He is also charged with driving without a valid license, which is a misdemeanor.

The Sheriff’s Department also said that he has an immigration detainer.

State Road 37 was closed for several hours after the crash. It is an ongoing investigation.
