Woke Representative Ilhan Omar was filmed laughing with Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and mall owner Basim Sabri at Karmel Mall on October 23, during a visit filmed by Fox News Digital following the October 12 federal search of her Washington home. The Justice Department confirmed that Homeland Security Investigations executed a court-authorized search warrant, while Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the case, that investigators were examining potential conspiracy, immigration fraud and false statements on immigration paperwork.
Investigators are reportedly continuing to examine and build a case around whether Omar or her relatives misrepresented her birth date, potentially affecting her eligibility to obtain citizenship through her father in 2000 as a minor, and whether her late father concealed information about his military history. Authorities seized electronic devices and issued more than a dozen subpoenas, including to relatives, according to news reports, while Fox News separately reported that investigators obtained Omar’s DNA and interviewed her sister, Sahra Noor.
Prosecutors also identified Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi” in a court filing, a designation her office rejected as false, with Omar telling Fox News Digital that her name is Ilhan Abdullahi Omar. The New York Times reported October 29 that investigators were revisiting allegations that her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi involved immigration fraud and that he was her brother—claims Omar denies—and that an earlier federal inquiry began in 2016 but stalled chiefly because prosecutors considered the potential offense outside the five-year statute of limitations.
Washington federal prosecutor Jeanine Pirro separately announced an investigation into Omar’s financial disclosures, which initially valued businesses connected to her husband at between $6 million and $30 million before an amendment reduced the couple’s reported assets to between $18,004 and $95,000; Omar’s office blamed accounting errors, and the separate congressional watchdog review recommended dismissal by a 5–1 vote.
President Donald Trump initially denied involvement in the search, saying it was a Justice Department matter, subsequently said Omar could face jail or deportation and demanded her resignation on October 22 while accusing her of using a false name. Omar has denied wrongdoing and described the investigation as political intimidation, while her attorneys have sought the return of seized property on grounds that agents violated protections for her congressional work.
